To highlight its 40th anniversary, the Outer Banks Community Foundation announced in March 2023 that it would award a $40,000 special impact grant to address mental health and substance abuse issues on the Outer Banks.
Sound Minds is the name of the project that received that Outer Banks Community Foundation’s grant and subsequent funding from many generous sources.
Begun in October 2023, Sound Minds is a collaborative project between Interfaith Community Outreach, the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, and the Dare County Department of Health and Human Services.
Staff from these agencies review applications from community members seeking help finding and paying for mental health and substance abuse counseling. And, together, these three agencies allocate Sound Mind funds to pay for these counseling services when appropriate.
The Sound Mind project would not be possible without the participation of the many talented public and private mental health providers in our community and beyond.
Anyone in our community can apply. After you fill out the online application, a screener will contact you. If you need help with this application, please call the Dare County Department of Social Services at 252-475-5500.
