Like many of us, Brian is a transplanted Outer Banks resident. Originally from Denver, Colorado, he came to our coast about seven years ago to live with his brother who wanted to support Brian during his recovery from addiction. Brian is proud to be clean and sober since July 10, 218, and happy to call the Outer Banks his home.
Over the last many years, Brian has worked at a few local businesses including four years with the Food Lion in Nags Head and, most recently, the iconic Duck Thru Deli where his job had him standing a good portion of the time.
On July 4, 2024, Brian woke in the middle of the night with excruciating pain in his hip. A visit to the emergency room led to X-rays and a CAT scan which revealed that his hip basically had a stroke. No blood was making it to his hip and the bone died.
Brian has since undergone several surgeries — one to replace his hip and more to treat infections. “I was in the hospital for over a week and was sent home with a port where my husband, Chris, had to administer six weeks of antibiotics to battle the infections.” Unable to work during this time, Brian began feeling the financial strain.
“It was really hard. The bills kept coming, the rent was due, and we were living on only one income.”
The Relief Foundation worked in tandem with Interfaith Community Outreach to offer Brian financial assistance which, in turn, has helped relieve some of his worry so that he can focus his energies on staying positive and healing.
“The Outer Banks Relief Foundation really came through for me, and I can tell anyone feeling overwhelmed that they are there and have the resources to help.”
